Pod koniec XIX w. nastąpiła popularyzacja i rozwój lecznictwa uzdrowiskowego, a szczególnie jego formy leczenia wodą. Na tradycje terapeutyczne śląskich zakładów przyrodoleczniczych, największy wpływ miały bez wątpienia dwie osoby: Vincenz Priessnitz oraz ks. Sebastian Kneipp. Nowoczesna metoda leczenia Kneippa, składa się z pięciu równorzędnych filarów: hydroterapii, leczenia ruchem, diety, leczniczego zastosowania ziół i przywracania równowagi psychicznej.
